I think that making cards is a bit of a lost art, but I believe it should become a key activity to teach children how to think of others on special days. This seasonal activity is perfect for kids of all ages and requires minimal supplies. Most of the items you’ll need are probably lying around your house or can be purchased at the Dollar Store, Target, Walmart or on Amazon.

You and your children can make Thanksgiving Cards, perhaps sharing what they are thankful for. Christmas Cards are fun to decorate and make the season of giving extra special for loved ones. In today’s blog post, I’m going to show you how I set up a card making station for Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to make cards for friends, family and teachers. Valentine’s Day is about showing the people in your lives just how special they are. I think it’s so important to teach my children ways to show others love and appreciation. Making cards is my way of teaching this to them. It is also a meaningful way to spend time together. During the process of making the cards, you and your child engage in conversation about the person whom the card is for. What does this person do for you? Why do you love spending time with this person? What is your favorite thing about this person? Encourage your child to personalize each card with words and pictures unique to each person. If your child doesn’t like to draw and/or isn’t writing words yet, ask them to tell you what they want to say and write this inside the card. It doesn’t really matter how the card looks because the thought that goes into it is most important.

We make Valentines’ Day cards for our grandparents and uncles. Our uncles live further away so my children enjoy putting the cards in the mail. We usually include a colored picture or two and a printed photo of the kids to make the stamp worth it lol. Then we make cards for our close friends and teachers.

I like to gather stickers, stampers, colored paper, special scissors and hole punchers for this card making station. One of my favorite things to do at the start of each holiday or season is to walk around the Dollar Store or the Bullseye’s Playground at Target. I enjoy checking out all the craft supplies, painting projects, and seasonal decor. I’m all about the cheap and cheerful Valentine’s Day decorations.

You can use a basket for all of the supplies or one of these colorful desk organizers. A clear plastic shoe box container or divided bin works well too! These can be found at the Dollar Store, making it inexpensive to set up! No need to break the bank for this project.

Craft Supplies for Card Making Station

Since this post is for Valentine’s Day cards, I included the following in our card making station:

Foam heart stickers in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors

Metallic heart stickers

Heart paper puncher

Sheets of pink, purple and red colored paper

Valentine’s Day Stamps

The following are items I always bring out when making cards:

Decorative Craft Scissors

Dot Markers

Glitter Glue

Crayons

Colored Pencils

Markers

Glue Sticks

You could also print Valentine’s Day coloring pages. Your child colors the picture and includes it with the card or cuts out parts of the picture and glues onto the card. There are so many websites that offer free coloring pages to print for your children. Check out this website for 75 free printable Valentine’s Day coloring pages. It’s another way to add a special touch to each card.

Simply set out all of the above mentioned materials in the basket, bin or container you choose to use and invite your children to go to town creating cards for friends, family, teachers and neighbors. Making, sending and giving Valentine’s Day cards brings a smile to others and makes them feel special.

During Sunday School at our church, I brought the card making materials. The kids in Sunday School created and decorated Valentine’s Day cards to send to the shut-ins. These are the individuals who are unable to attend church in person due to health and medical reasons. They love receiving cards from the kids in Sunday School. The children also enjoyed making cute foam Valentine’s Day magnets to include with each card. It’s a sweet way to share God’s love with others, especially those who may be alone, sick, or feeling sad.

Let’s use Valentine’s Day as a way to spread God’s love and send or give homemade cards! Who will your child make a Valentine’s Day card for?
