Superbowl 52 is just around the corner.  As a Philadelphia Eagles fan, I’m pumped to watch this annual sporting event with my family and friends.  Watching football in our house means small bites and snacks!  We love eating small bites and snacks because it gives us a variety of things to eat while watching our favorite sports team on TV.  These are our favorite finger foods to make and eat for the big game.  Enjoy!

Chicken Tenders/Chicken Nuggets

I love making my own Chicken Tenders and Chicken Nuggets.  They are easy, healthy (I bake them) and inexpensive to make.  You can really stretch a value pack of chicken breasts or tenders by preparing your own Chicken Tenders and Chicken Nuggets.  My favorite way to prepare these is by cutting chicken breasts into long strips or bite-sized nuggets, marinating in ranch dressing and then coating in crushed Goldfish Crackers.  We recently were gifted a big box of Goldfish Crackers for Christmas.  I knew we wouldn’t finish the crackers before the expiration date so I started searching for recipes and came across the idea for coating the chicken in Goldfish Crackers.  What a great idea, especially for kids, and a delicious one at that!  These were definitely a hit with my 14 month old daughter and my husband!  You can read more about the recipe that inspired me to prepare Goldfish Crusted Chicken Nuggets here.  You can even get your kids involved in making these Goldfish Chicken Nuggets!

Quesadillas

Quesadillas are so easy to make and we always keep a pack of large flour tortillas in the freezer.  Our favorite cheeses to use in Quesadillas are Sharp Cheddar, Colby Jack and Mozzarella.  Quesadillas are a great go-to finger food because you can use up leftover meat.  There are so many different combinations you can make too!  These are a few of our favorites.  My husband is happiest when there is cheese and bacon inside his Quesadilla.

  • Shredded Chicken, Cheddar Cheese
  • Hot Dogs, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese
  • Spinach, Mushrooms, Chicken, Mozzarella Cheese
  • Chicken, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese
  • Steak, Cheddar Cheese
  • Pizza Quesadilla – Sliced Pepperoni, Spinach, Mozzarella Cheese
  • Cheeseburger Quesadilla – Ground Beef, Caramelized Onions, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese

Mini Strombolis

We stock our fridge with Crescent Roll dough ever since I came across the idea of rolling Mozzarella Cheese and Pepperoni inside.  Sometimes I add Spinach for additional nutrition if I have some in the refrigerator.  To make these, I open, unroll and separate the Crescent Roll dough into the 8 sections.  Then, I open and cut in half 4 Mozzarella Cheese Sticks.  For each Crescent Roll, I place 5 pieces of sliced Pepperoni and a Mozzarella Cheese Stick halve.  I roll the Crescent Roll and bring close each end by bringing up the corners.  This holds the cheese inside when it starts melting.  If you don’t want the cheese to melt as much, you can put the Mozzarella Cheese Sticks in the freezer.  After I’ve filled all of the Crescent Rolls, I place them on an ungreased cookie sheet.  I brush some melted butter on top and sprinkle with Garlic Pepper Seasoning, my favorite Tastefully Simple Seasoning and my go-to for making Garlic Bread.  You can use Garlic Salt or a combination of Garlic Powder and Salt.  I do this so the Crescent Roll has a Garlic Bread flavor to it.  I bake the Mini Strombolis at 375* for 15 minutes or until they are golden brown.  I serve them with warmed up Marinara Sauce.

Nachos

Homemade Nachos are easy, inexpensive and fun to make!  They are a quick go-to lunch or dinner in our house.  My husband likes to make his Nachos using Cool Ranch Doritos or Nacho Cheese Doritos.  I like to make my Nachos using Multi-Grain Tortilla Chips, Blue Corn Tortilla Chips or Regular Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips.  We do our grocery shopping at Aldi and they have quite the variety of Tortilla Chips.  To make Homemade Nachos, spread a layer of Tortilla Chips on a plate.  Sprinkle your favorite cheese over the chips.  My favorite is Colby Jack and my husband prefers Sharp Cheddar.  After the cheese goes on, you can add any of your preferred toppings.  My husband just eats his Nachos with cheese.  I like to put black beans and corn on mine.  I always keep a few cans of black beans in the pantry and a bag of corn in the freezer.  Once the chips are all cheesed up, we put in the microwave for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted.  I will top my Nachos with plain Greek Yogurt and Salsa because we always have these two items in our house.  I think Greek Yogurt tastes the same as Sour Cream and it is healthier!  Sometimes I will have Avocados on hand if they were on sale.  If this is the case, I will put 1/2 an Avocado on my Homemade Nachos.  Homemade Nachos are similar to Quesadillas in the way you can use whatever you have on hand in your house.  You can add shredded chicken, steak, ground beef or ground turkey to your Homemade Nachos.  The possibilities are endless and yummy!

Alice Fries

One of our favorite Sports Bars is PJ Whelihan’s Pub and Restaurant.  PJ’s is known for its wings and famous Alice Fries.  Every time we eat at PJ’s, we order an appetizer of Alice Fries.  Not every PJ Whelihan’s makes Alice Fries, but the location near our house does!  We enjoy these Alice Fries so much that we were inspired to make our own at home.  We make Alice Fries by baking frozen Crinkle Cut french fries in a single layer on a cookie sheet.  I’ve also used Waffle Cut french fries.  Then, I sprinkle Old Bay Seasoning over the fries followed by Sharp Cheddar Cheese and crushed up bacon.  The fries go back in the oven until the cheese is melted.  They come out of the oven and I sprinkle scallions over top.  The scallions definitely make the fries.  I can’t describe why the fries need the scallions.  The combination just works!  I don’t put too much, just a little bit.  I like to dip my Alice Fries in ranch dressing and my husband will eat his as is.  They are one of our favorite things to make at home, especially when we are watching football!

Wings

As I mentioned above, PJ Whelihan’s Pub and Restaurant is known for its wings.  Sometimes we order wings with a Hot and Honey sauce, but I do like to make my own wings.  We recently stumbled upon a 5 lb bag of Chicken Wings at Costco!  The price seemed right for the Chicken Wings.  It was definitely more affordable than ordering wings from a restaurant.  I actually separated the 5 lb bag into thirds because three gallon sized bags of Chicken Wings were easier to fit into our freezer than one big 5 lb bag!  I usually make wings when friends and family come over to watch a game because when you make wings, you can’t just make a few.  I’ve experimented with different ways of making wings, but I think my favorite way of making them is using the Crock Pot, followed by broiling them until they get crispy.  I liked cooking them in the Crock Pot because I found the meat to be moist and flavorful from cooking a long time in our favorite sauce.  The sauce I like to use is Tastefully Simple’s Honey Teriyaki.  Also, by using the Crock Pot, I put the wings in the morning, set the Crock Pot to cook and continue about my day.  The Crock Pot makes preparation really easy!

Chicken Wings 2

These are our favorite small bites and snacks to prepare and eat while watching the Eagles play football, the Phillies play baseball, and the Flyers and Penguins play hockey.  As you can see, they are all easy to prepare and inexpensive!  There’s something relaxing about sitting in front of the TV in the comfort of your own home, watching sports, with a plate of finger foods to munch on.  We will be snacking on several of these yummy finger foods on February 4th when the Eagles play the Patriots in Superbowl 52.  What are your favorite finger foods to prepare for the Superbowl?  I’d love to hear about the snacks your family enjoys eating during the big game!

  1. As I cheer for the Patriots next week 😉 we’ll be snacking on similar things! Wings and nachos are definitely staples. I may make some chili or have meatballs and then a veggie tray with hummus (to have a healthy option, that most people don’t touch!). I also like to make festive brownies or cupcakes for something sweet.

That sounds like a great spread for Super Bowl! We also put out veggies, dip and sometimes crackers and cheese. I am usually the only one who eats the veggies! We will be making a sweet treat too! Last year, I baked cupcakes and colored the icing to match the teams that were playing. Not sure what I will bake this year! Enjoy the game and feasting on your yummy food 🙂

I thought the use of Goldfish Crackers was a great idea too! When I came across that idea, I was sold. They add the perfect crunch, add flavor to the chicken and so easy to make. As a mom, I always have Goldfish Crackers in our snack cabinet 🙂

  2. These are great picks for the big game! I think I could have a plate of those Alice fries and mini strombolis all to myself. 🙂
